Six Membership Levels

There are SIX levels of membership to choose from within BCATA Membership. All levels of BCATA membership are

  • welcome to attend annual general meetings,
  • entitled to reduced rates at BCATA conferences,
  • entitled to receive the BCATA newsletter (View our newsletter archives: Art Therapist)
  • The right to vote and hold office is reserved for Registered Members and Professional Members.

  • Professional Member (Adler, DVATI, DKATI) $115
    Professional Membership is open to all art therapists who have completed post-graduate professional training in Art Therapy from an accredited school or institute of art therapy (eg. Adler, VATI, KATI, TATI, Concordia, etc).

    Bylaw 2.3: Professional Membership with BCATA is open to those:

    a) Who have completed professional training in art therapy through a Masters degree in art therapy; a Masters degree in the field of social sciences and a 15 month diploma program at an institute of art therapy; or an undergraduate degree and a 2 year diploma program from an institute of art therapy. The training program is to include a minimum of 600 supervised practicum hours.

    b) Whose qualifications are from outside Canada may apply for equivalency consideration.These members must submit both original and translated copies of their supporting documentation, the number of practicum hours completed must be included. If the required practicum hours are incomplete, these members may submit up to 300 post graduate client contact hours in a clinical or agency setting, supervised at a ratio of 1hour to each 20 client contact hours. This supervision must be provided by a registered art therapist, or equivalent who holds current professional liability insurance and is in good standing with their professional association.

    c) Who have a signed a statement that if practicing, they have liability insurance coverage.

    d) Who have made application to the Association in prescribed form, have been admitted as professional members and remain members in good standing.


    Step One: Apply for Professional Membership

    To apply for Professional Membership you must submit the following documentation.

    a) 2 reference letters (at least one referee must be directly familiar with your art therapy work; for example a supervisor or teacher)

    b) a scan-copy of your art therapy diploma or educational transcripts (one of the other – both are not required)

    Step Two: Complete Payment

    Once approved you will be given a BCATA Membership Number so you can complete your membership by clicking the registration button below.

  • Registered Member (BCATR, ATR, RCAT) $115
    Registered Members are Professional Art Therapists that have completed the pre-requisites below and have been approved for registered status with the BCATA Registration Chair.  View Registration Application PDF

    BYLAW 2.3: View Registration Application PDF. Registered professional membership, “BCATR” British Columbia Art Therapist Registered, shall be open to all professional members in good standing who:

    a) have completed a Masters degree or higher in art therapy, a Masters degree in the field of social sciences and a 15 month diploma program at an institute of art therapy, or an undergraduate degree and a 2 year diploma program from an institute of art therapy;

    b) and have completed with signed documentation, 1,000 post – graduate direct paid client contact hours in a clinical setting or agency setting supervised by a BCATR, or equivalent (e.g. ATR, or RCAT) who holds current professional liability insurance and in good standing with their professional association, at a ratio of 1 hour to each 20 client contact hours.

    c) sign a statement that if practicing, they have liability insurance coverage

    d) have made application to the Registration Committee of the BCATA, have been admitted as registered members and remain members in good standing

    Step One: Apply for Registered Status

    Once you have completed the 4 points above please

    ATTACH ALL DOCUMENTS (including your Registration Application) to the BCATA Registration Chair in ONE email via membership@bcarttherapy.com.


    Fast Track your Application

    If you are already a registered member of another Registered Art Therapy Association you can Fast Track your BCATA Registered Membership by submitting proof of registration with another art therapy professional association to membership@bcarttherapy.com.

    Step Two: Complete Payment

    Join BCATA as Registered Member

  • Student Member FREE
    Open to all students currently studying art therapy at an accredited school or institution of art therapy (eg. Adler, VATI, KATI, etc.)

    BYLAW 2.7: Student membership shall be open to students officially enrolled in art therapy training courses. Student members shall be entitled to attend meetings and special programs of the society and to receive all official publications. Student members have the right to hold office as student representatives of their art therapy institution.

    PLEASE NOTE: Student members do not qualify for liability insurance through the BCATA carrier.


    Step One: Apply for Student Membership

    Please send a scan-copy of your Student ID

    or official correspondence from school administration to membership@bcarttherapy.com to apply for a Student Membership.


    Step Two: Complete Payment

    Once approved you will be given a BCATA Membership Number so you can complete
    your membership by clicking the registration button below.

  • Associate Member $60
    Open to volunteers or individuals who are not professional art therapists. Contact information will not be displayed in the BCATA Art Therapist Directory.

    BYLAW 2.7:  Associate membership shall be open to volunteers or individuals who are not professional art therapists and, who wish to support the field of art therapy and the association. It may also include educational institutions, agencies, and non – profit organizations. Such membership shall provide for admission to the meetings and special programs of the society and the receipt of all official publications.


    Step One: Apply for Associate Status

    Send an email to membership@bcarttherapy.com to apply.

    Once approved you will be given a BCATA Membership Number so you can complete your membership by clicking the registration button below.

    Join BCATA as Associate Member
  • Retired Member $40
    Retired membership shall be open to registered professional members or professional members who are art therapists who have retired from practicing art therapy but wish to retain membership.

    Bylaw 2.10: Retired membership shall be open to registered professional members or professional members who are art therapists who have retired from practicing art therapy but wish to retain membership. Retired members may participate in all activities of the society and shall receive all publications.
